In early May 2024, it became known in St. Petersburg about a criminal case of espionage against Ukrainian citizen Viktor Rudenko - the case was submitted to the St. Petersburg City Court for consideration. The exact date of the initiation of the criminal case and the detention are unknown. According to the security forces, Rudenko, being a supporter of the current leadership of Ukraine, due to his negative attitude towards the special military operation conducted by the Russian Federation, with the aim of inflicting fire damage on Russian military personnel, weapons, and military equipment, in March 2022, while on the territory of Ukraine, collected and transmitted information to individuals acting in the interests of the SBU for use against the security of the Russian Federation. As a result of Rudenko's actions, a motorized rifle division unit came under mortar fire from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. On August 19, 2024, the St. Petersburg City Court found Viktor Rudenko guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in a strict regime colony with confiscation of the proceeds of the crime. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
