Case Description
On July 22, 2022, in Bashkortostan, during an attempt to climb Mount Yamantau (this mountain located in Bashkortostan is the highest peak of the Southern Urals, climbing it is prohibited due to the status of a reserve, which the territory received with the beginning of the construction of the ZATO Mezhgorye and secret facilities in it), 32-year-old climber Velimor Merkurov was detained. During the search, security forces found a Ukrainian flag on him - Merkulev said that he intended to plant it on the top of the mountain." Then Merkuleva was released, after conducting a pre-investigation check, a case was not initiated. However, later a criminal case was opened against the young man for high treason and justification of terrorism. According to the investigation, Merkulev, in order to influence the decision of the authorities of the Russian Federation to stop the SVO, posted on his page on a social network a publication of one of the communities about the explosion on October 8, 2022 on the Crimean Bridge, which led to its partial collapse, as well as a comment to the publication, inciting other users to repeat these actions." "Questioned as a witness, Merkulyov's mother stated that her son published materials on social networks expressing disagreement with the "SVO, as well as reposted appeals from Ukrainian resources to Russian military personnel to surrender and videos of interrogations of Russian prisoners of war. In conversations with his friends, Velimor Merkulyov claimed that he had allegedly established contact with the Ukrainian side, so in the event of mobilization, he would find a way to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces." The court sent Merkulev into custody for the duration of the investigation. On March 1, 2024, the Central District Military Court found Velimir Merkurov guilty and sentenced him to 13 years of imprisonment in a strict regime colony and 1 year of restricted freedom. The court also fined Merkuleva 200 thousand. rubles and imposed a ban on administering websites on the Internet for 3 years after release. On September 9, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
