On March 14, 2024, in the village of Reftinsky, Sverdlovsk Oblast, a 38-year-old local resident, an employee of the Reftinsky poultry farm, Valeria Marchenko, was detained. Accused of preparing a terrorist attack, by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, and confidential cooperation with a foreign organization against the interests of the Russian Federation. According to the investigation, between 22 and 24 March 2024, Marchenko attempted to set fire to the Central Regional Military Commissariat in the centre of Yekaterinburg. Federal Security Service officers detained her on the way to the military enlistment office with eight Molotov cocktails. The prosecution believes that Marchenko attempted arson "in order to destabilize the authorities and influence decisions to end the SMO." The court placed the woman in custody. Later, the charge was reclassified as treason. On June 5, 2025, the Central Military District Court found Valeria Marchenko guilty and sentenced her to 20 years in prison. On December 2, 2025, the Appellate Military Court, at the request of the prosecutor, toughened the punishment: it reclassified the charge of attempted state treason to a completed offense - state treason in the form of espionage, and increased the punishment to 21 years of imprisonment in a general regime correctional colony.
