Case Description
In the suburbs of St. Petersburg, at the 13th kilometer of the Obukhovo-Slavyanka section of the October Railway, on July 14, 2023, at 1:10 a.m., an unknown person set fire to a relay cabinet responsible for switching turnouts and traffic lights on the line." The equipment burned out completely. Suburban trains Lyubany - St. Petersburg (7 minutes late) and Mga - St. Petersburg (6 minutes late) were late due to the fire. Also, a passenger train from St. Petersburg to Astrakhan was delayed by six minutes. On October 26, 2023, 26-year-old Valery Nechaev, a native of the village of Peno in the Tver region, was detained on charges of arson." It is reported that Nechayev had previously been repeatedly convicted and was on federal wanted list for theft. In St. Petersburg, he allegedly lived under someone else's documents and worked as a security guard in a restaurant. Initially, a criminal case was opened against Nechayev for intentional destruction or damage to property. The maximum punishment is five years in prison. But later the charge was reclassified as committing a terrorist act. Nechaeva was sent to a pre-trial detention center. September 5, 2024, the 1st Western Military Court found Valery Nechaev guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, with the first 5 years to be served in a prison, and the remaining years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
