Case Description
On September 17, 2014, 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen Valentin Vygovskiy was detained in Simferopol, annexed Crimea. At first he was accused of disclosing a commercial secret, but later the charge was reclassified as espionage. According to the investigation, Vygovskyy used the internet to recruit employees of Russian defense industry organizations in the aviation and space sector to collect and transmit secret technical documentation to him for monetary compensation. He intended to sell the collected information to a representative of the military attache of the PRC in Belgium. Vyhovsky was detained at the moment of transferring money to a Russian citizen for the materials received. For the duration of the investigation, the defendants in the case were transferred to Moscow and placed in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. On December 15, 2015, the Moscow Oblast Court found Valentin Vygovsky guilty and sentenced him to 11 years in a strict regime colony. On March 31, 2016, the Supreme Court of Russia left the verdict unchanged.
