Case Description
On May 9, 2024, an 18-year-old resident of the city of Irbit, Vadim Tomilov, was detained in a hostel in Yekaterinburg. He was taken to the police station at the Koltsovo airport. It is claimed that during a search, police officers found a belt with an image of the Third Reich coat of arms on the buckle and a ticket to Tbilisi with a departure date of May 11. At the airport police department, they held him until night." "In the morning, employees in civilian clothes came to the department, tied Tomilova's hands with a belt, and pulled a hat over her eyes. When he tried to move or remove his hat, he was given a smack on the back of the head and "not too hard" hit in the stomach. They said they would take me to some room and there connect me to an electroshock device, and when they realized I was not afraid, they started saying they would come to my house in Irbit and beat my parents ten at a time, Tomilov later recounted during a court interrogation. According to him, the threats were actively voiced by 'a big bearded man with two pistols in his hands.' After the "insistent recommendations" of the FSB officers, Tomilov wrote a confession. A criminal case was opened against the young man on attempted participation in a terrorist organization. According to the investigation, between December 2, 2023 and May 9, 2024, Tomilov, opposing Russian authorities and the conduct of the "SVO", joined the "Russian Volunteer Corps. He allegedly contacted the organization through a Telegram bot and filled out a questionnaire to join the RDK. Next, according to the security forces, Tomilov planned to travel to Tbilisi for a face-to-face meeting with a representative of the RDK, and upon approval of his candidacy, he was supposed to join the ranks of the corps on Ukrainian territory. Judge Anastasia Kuznetsova of the Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg chose Tomilova's measure of restraint in the form of detention. Later, the charges were toughened: attempted participation in a terrorist organization was replaced by participation in a terrorist organization, and a charge of treason was also added. On September 15, 2025, the Central Military District Court found Vadim Tomilov guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in prison, 3 years of which he must serve in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony.
