Case Description

In Moscow on January 18, 2024, Usman Baratov, the head of the Uzbek community "Vatandosh, was detained. Charges were brought against him on Bastrykin's orders for inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliating the dignity of SMO participants. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a post on Burtov's page on "Odnoklassniki" from December 16, 2023, which talks about the shortage of eggs in Russia. The text is accompanied by a picture in which a chicken says: "You won't get eggs with butter, you'll get nothing! Bring the roosters back from the front. According to the head of the regional association, his account was hacked and this post has nothing to do with the alleged insults to the participants of the SVO that he is accused of. Baratov was taken to a unit of the Moscow Investigative Committee for investigative actions." The next day, on January 19, the Zamoskvoretsky City Court of Moscow chose a measure of restraint for Baratova in the form of detention. On August 2, 2024, the Stupinsky City Court of the Moscow Region suspended the consideration of the case due to Baratov's serious illness. On August 12, 2024, the Stupinsky City Court of the Moscow Region found Usman Barkhatov guilty and sentenced him to 4 years in a general regime colony. 31 October 2024, the Moscow Regional Court left the sentence unchanged. On August 28, 2025, the First Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction changed the verdict: it reclassified the charge under the article on incitement of hatred or enmity, excluding the qualification on the grounds of a prior conspiracy with a group of persons, and imposed a sentence of deprivation of liberty for 3 years and 2 months in a penal colony-settlement. No later than March 2025, a second criminal case was opened against Baratov - for the disorganization of the work of the colony. According to him, the reason for the new persecution was a statement by the head of the detachment, who claimed that during communication through the feeding hatch of the SHIZO, Baratov took away his video recorder and threw it at his chest, causing pain. Baratov himself denies the accusations: he said that since his transfer to the colony, he has never been in the detachment. After the quarantine, the man was immediately placed in a SHIZO, where he spent 42 days, and on March 3 he was sent to a punishment cell-type facility (PKT). On October 20, 2025, the Valdai District Court of the Novgorod Region found Barat Usmanov guilty and sentenced him to 1 year and 8 months in a strict regime colony."
