Case Description
The Investigative Committee of Russia in April 2022 opened a criminal case on recruiting mercenaries and their participation in an armed conflict against the commander of the 'Georgian National Legion' Mamuka Mamulaishvili and 24 Georgian citizens. One of those who came under criminal prosecution was Georgian citizen Tornike Tivadze. He was accused in absentia of mercenary activity. According to the Russian investigation, Tivadze arrived at the "Georgian National Legion" permanent deployment point in March 2022 with the aim of receiving material compensation of over 4.2 million rubles and voluntarily joined its ranks. He was provided with personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms, and special equipment. Tivadze underwent military training at the training bases of the 'Georgian National Legion.'" 4. Then, while on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, he participated in hostilities on the side of Ukrainian security forces against representatives of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The Supreme Court of the Donetsk Republic found Tornike Tivadze guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 14 years in a strict regime colony no later than December 10, 2024. The court also put him on international wanted list. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
