Case Description

On 14 June 2024, a criminal case was opened in the Udmurt Republic against 19-year-old student from Glazov Timofey Smirnov on charges of sabotage on the railway. Regional FSB officers detained him on June 19, 2024. Smirnova was accused of committing sabotage on the railway as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy. According to the investigation, the motive for the crime was disagreement with the policy of the Russian Federation and the conduct of the war, as well as the desire to 'disrupt railway communication in order to reduce the supply of ammunition to the combat zone on the territory of Ukraine'. According to the investigation, in June 2024, Smirnov contacted an unidentified person on the Telegram messenger, who offered him to set fire to a relay cabinet on the railway "in order to undermine the economic security and defense capability of the Russian Federation." "Having received the coordinates and instructions, on the night of June 14, Smirnov set fire to a relay cabinet of a signal device on the section of the Glazov-Balezino stations of the Gorky Railway." OAO "RZD" suffered damage amounting to 17,694.44 rubles as a result of arson. The case against an unidentified accomplice has been separated into a separate proceeding. On July 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Udmurt Republic found Timofey Smirnov guilty and sentenced him to 12 years and 6 months in prison. Sentenced to 3 years in prison, followed by the remainder of the sentence in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
