Case Description

On October 22, 2024, in Kazan, a search was conducted at the home of 15-year-old Sultan Sevastyanov. His phone and "other material evidence" were confiscated, after which the young man was taken to the police station, where he stayed until seven o'clock in the evening, waiting for his mother. According to him, security forces intimidated him and threatened his mother with dismissal. At the police station, Sevastyan was questioned together with his teacher and in the presence of his mother." A criminal case was opened against the teenager for vandalism motivated by political hatred. Sevastyanov was also threatened with being charged under a 'more serious article,' but they did not specify which one. The reason for the criminal prosecution was the graffiti "Navalny" and "Putin is war and poverty" that appeared on Voznesensky Tract in Kazan - the city was hosting a BRICS summit with Putin's participation at the time. Team Navalny published photos of alleged graffiti on October 21, claiming it was "a protest on the streets of Kazan by volunteers from campaign offices." After questioning, the teenager was released on his own recognizance. 29 April 2025, the magistrate of the court of justice No. 10 of the Soviet District Court of Kazan found Sevastyan Sultanov guilty and sentenced him to 1 year of restriction of liberty - the teenager was prohibited from attending public events, being outside the house from 22:00 to 06:00, leaving the city without notifying the relevant authorities. The judge also ordered to return his confiscated gadgets.
