Case Description
In early April 2022, searches were conducted in the apartments of local residents Sergey Zvyagin and Alexey Vedeneev in Moscow as part of a criminal case on vandalism motivated by political hatred. According to the investigation, the men, being drunk, entered the Rus store and bought spray cans with black paint there. After that, as the prosecution claims, Zvyagin and Vedeneev painted anti-war inscriptions on the building, the literal content of which is unknown. Zvyagin's wife reported that a criminal case was initiated because of the inscriptions that, according to the investigation, discredited the armed forces of the Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin. After the searches, the Solntsevsky District Court of Moscow placed both men under house arrest. On June 29, 2022, the magistrate judge of the judicial district of the magistrate's court No. 143 of Moscow found Sergey Zvyagin and Alexey Vedeneev guilty and sentenced both to eight months of restriction of freedom. The court obliged the men not to change their permanent place of residence without the consent of a specialized state body, not to leave Moscow, not to leave their place of permanent residence from ten o'clock in the evening until six o'clock in the morning. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
