Case Description
In the Belgorod region on December 16, 2022, at the Kolotilovka checkpoint while crossing the Russian-Ukrainian border, 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen Sergey Shiyyan was abducted. Long time nothing was known about his fate. At the end of August 2024, the man was officially charged with espionage. According to Russian law enforcement, in November 2022, Shiyan, while at his place of residence in the village of Yasinovka, Makeyevka, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, collected and passed on to an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine data on the locations of firing positions of units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. This data could have been used against the interests of the Russian Federation. It is claimed that Shiyyan tried to leave the territory of the "DPR" and go to Ukraine, but he was detained when crossing the border. On September 19, 2024, the Ukrainian was transferred to Donetsk, where the court, at the request of the investigation, placed him in a pre-trial detention center. On June 17, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Sergey Shiyany guilty and sentenced him to 17 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. October 21, 2025, the Military Appellate Court left the sentence unchanged.
