Case Description
On March 11, 2025, a 50-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a serviceman of the 57th separate regiment of communication and radio-technical support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Chief Sergeant Sergei Shepotko, was captured by the Russian military in the Kursk region during combat operations. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, which caused significant damage.
According to the Russian investigation, on February 11, 2025 Shepotko, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle and German-made grenades, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation on an armored personnel carrier as part of a unit and entered the Kursk region. In accordance with the order determined by his superior command, Shepotko arrived at his assigned area near the village of Goncharovka, Sujan district, Kursk region, and took up an observation and firing position with the aim of "blocking and holding the settlement under armed control".
On September 22, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Sergei Shepotko guilty and sentenced him to 16 years' imprisonment with the first 4 years to be served in prison and the rest in a strict regime penal colony. The sentence was not appealed and came into legal force.
