In St. Petersburg in early May 2023, two local residents were detained - 21-year-old Sergey Saratovtsev and 23-year-old Vasily Ivanov. According to the investigation, no later than May 1, 20023, an unidentified person persuaded Saratovtseva for a monetary reward of 8 thousand. rubles to commit arson of a railway relay cabinet, and also taught him how to make a flammable mixture and the method of committing arson. It is also claimed that Saratovets involved his acquaintance, Vasily Ivanov, in the arson by forwarding him the received instructions on making the mixture, the method of committing arson, as well as the coordinates. 4 May Saratov and Ivanov arrived at the 11th kilometre of the 4th picket of the railway section of the St. Petersburg stations "Novaya Derevnya" - "Lakhta", where they set fire to a relay cabinet belonging to JSC "RZD. Initially, a criminal case was opened against the men for the destruction of someone else's property, but later, on 13 July of the same year, the case was reclassified as sabotage committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. On the same day, the Primorsky District Court of St. Petersburg, at the request of the investigation, sent Saratovtsev and Ivanov into custody. 4 December 2024, the St. Petersburg City Court found Sergey Saratovtsev and Vasily Ivanov guilty and sentenced both to 9 years in a strict regime penal colony, with the first 3 years to be served in prison and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. On February 25, 2025, the Second Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict.
