In the city of Kovylkino, on July 19, 2024, a search was conducted at the home of 68-year-old human rights defender Sergey Maryin. According to him, security forces came to his house with sledgehammers and seized all the equipment. After the interrogation, Maryin was released on his own recognizance. A criminal case was opened against the human rights activist for repeated "discrediting" of the army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was Maryin's post from February 24, 2024, about the death of politician Alexei Navalny and the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine: "Today is the ninth day since the death of Alexei Navalny, a foreign agent, terrorist, and extremist in Putin's opinion. Today is the anniversary of the war with Ukraine. 5. 'There, in Putin's opinion, it is necessary to denazify, that is, to kill all Ukrainians,' Mar'in wrote. In August, the investigator twice chose Maryina's preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave, but the human rights activist through the court achieved the recognition of one of these decisions as unfounded. Earlier, in July 2022, Maryin was charged under a case of an administrative offense under the article on "discrediting the army" due to comments in which he condemned the war in Ukraine. On March 25, 2025, the Leninsky District Court of Saransk found Sergey Marinin guilty and sentenced him to 1 year in a penal colony-settlement. On June 5, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Mordovia upheld the verdict.
