Case Description
In Nizhny Novgorod, no later than March 2023 (the exact date is unknown), a criminal case was opened for "fakes" about the Russian army on the grounds of political hatred against 47-year-old historian and former executive director of the "Sakharov Center" Sergey Lukashevsky. Initially, a case was opened under Part 1 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, but the charges were later toughened. The reason for the criminal prosecution was five posts on Facebook: — a text about the killings of residents of Bucha and a reminder of the killings in Novye Aldy; — a text with the words "By starting a war to subjugate Ukraine, Russia is destroying Ukrainian cities and villages, killing and enslaving the people living there"; — a text with the words "An unjust aggressive war, the death of women, children and the elderly, violence and looting, the destruction of cities to the ground — it is impossible to watch the countless war crimes, the meanness and lies, when they are committed by your own country, in its name"; — a text with the words "Through the bitterness of thoughts about those who have already died, been wounded, lost their homes because of this terrible war..."; — congratulations to "Memorial" on the Nobel Prize with the words "All the horrors that the Russian army and special services are committing in Ukraine today — shelling of civilian objects, kidnappings and extrajudicial executions, referendums under the barrels of machine guns — happened in the North Caucasus many years ago. Memorial painstakingly, consistently, and at the risk of their lives reported on all of this. Lukashchevsky himself is in exile. It is not known what preventive measure was chosen for him. On November 18, 2024, the Moscow District Court of Nizhny Novgorod found Sergey Lukashevsky guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in prison and 1 year of prohibition on administering internet resources. On February 24, 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court changed the verdict, details are unknown.
