Case Description
In September 2019, Russian security forces kidnapped a 47-year-old local resident, the head of a small security firm, Sergey Kuris, in occupied Donetsk. He was seized during a walk with his wife and child - right near the house, people in civilian clothes twisted him and dragged him into a car. Four days after the kidnapping, employees" of the so-called "UBOPA" turned Kuris's apartment in Donetsk upside down, confiscated all equipment and documents, including a passport of a citizen of Ukraine. During the 'search', Sergei himself was present - they brought his wife and son, who had been severely beaten and in a semi-conscious state. Later, Sergey was able to pass a note to his family, in which he told in the third person that he was beaten, electrocuted, and hung on a rack on the territory of the so-called "secret prison" - in the "UBOP" of the "DNR" group. Later it became known that the Russian investigation accused Kuris of espionage, terrorism, and cooperation with the SBU. November 8, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Sergey Kuris guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in a strict regime colony. August 5, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged. On August 14, 2025, the Ukrainian was released as a result of another prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine."
