Case Description
In February 2023, a criminal case was initiated in Nizhny Novgorod against 35-year-old local resident Sergey Ganin for participating in an illegal armed formation on the territory of a foreign state. According to the siloviki's version, in 2014-2015, Ganin fought as part of the 'Volunteer Ukrainian Corps'. One of the pieces of evidence of the man's guilt was the video recording 'He Left Ilovaisk'." "The prosecution witnesses stated that they recognized Sergey Ganin in her. Witnesses also testified that he allegedly told them about his participation in combat operations in Ukraine and planned to go to Ukraine again in 2023 to fight against the Russian army. Ganin himself insisted that he had an alibi: throughout the period in question, he was working on construction sites in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow and was under supervision due to a previous conviction. The man was placed in a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation. January 21, 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod District Court in Nizhny Novgorod found Sergey Ganin guilty and sentenced him to nine years in a general regime colony. 9 April 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court upheld the sentence.
