Case Description
In annexed Crimea in May 2023, during a live broadcast by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, one of the users wrote pro-Ukrainian comments under the video and called for "f***ing up Crimea. It turned out that the account belongs to a 37-year-old resident of Kerch, a senior investigator of the control and methodological department of the Investigative Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea, Major of Justice Sergey Yefanov. 25 May 2023 he was dismissed for committing an offense discrediting the honor of an employee of the internal affairs bodies. On May 26, 2023, a search was conducted at Yefanov's place. His equipment was confiscated and he was taken in for questioning. The formal reason for the search was suspicion of allegedly illegal circulation of explosives or explosive devices. Before the election of a preventive measure, Yefanov was placed in a temporary detention facility. Kyivsky District Court of Simferopol sent the former major to a pre-trial detention center the next day, on May 27. After checking Yefanov's phone, another criminal case was opened against him - for treason and abuse of official powers by an official contrary to the interests of the service. According to the investigation, Yefanov collected and transmitted information from various databases on the instructions of Ukrainian intelligence, and also shared data of security forces. Additionally, the man was accused of sending photographs of military facilities and ships located in Kerch. 28 November 2023, the Central District Court of Simferopol found Sergey Efanov guilty in a case involving illegal circulation of explosives and sentenced him to 9 years in a strict regime penal colony and a fine of 300 thousand. rubles. On August 8, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea found Sergey Efanov guilty in a case of state treason and abuse of official powers and sentenced him to 12.5 years in prison in a strict regime correctional colony. Based on the totality of the crimes, by partially adding the unserved portion of the sentence from the verdict of the Central District Court of Simferopol, the court imposed a final sentence of 14 years of imprisonment in a strict regime correctional colony. October 23, 2024, the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction changed the verdict, details are unknown.
