Case Description
In early October 2023, a search was conducted at the home of local resident Sergey Bakanov in Ryazan. A criminal case was opened against him for the repeated "discrediting of the Russian army" and he was released on the condition of appearing. The reason for the criminal prosecution was three anti-war tweets. Earlier, in July, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Ryazan fined Bakanov 45 thousand rubles under the article on discrediting the army. Then the reason for persecution was a post on VKontakte about the bombing of civilian objects in Ukraine by Russian military personnel. On November 19, 2024, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Ryazan found Sergey Bakanov guilty and sentenced him to 2.5 years of imprisonment with a probationary period of 2 years. In addition, the court banned Bakanov from administering pages on the Internet for 2 years. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
