Case Description
On November 3, 2024, in Moscow, 49-year-old tower crane operator Sergei Andreyev was detained. During a search of his apartment, security forces allegedly found gunpowder and detonators. Subsequently, an examination did not identify the item as having the characteristics of an explosive device, and its component turned out to be a pyrotechnic composition from a firework used during celebrations. A criminal case was opened against the Muscovite for hooliganism committed with the use of explosives or explosive devices. According to the investigation, in the fall of 2023, the man made two attempts to set fire to the military enlistment office building in the Akademichny district of Moscow using explosives. The first time the device did not work, and the second time it detonated, but no one was injured in the explosion, and the building suffered minor damage. On November 4, 2023, the Cheryomushkinsky District Court of Moscow sent Andreyev into custody. Later, the charge was reclassified as a terrorist act committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant property damage. The crane operator was also charged with illegal trafficking and manufacture of explosive devices and weapons, participation in a terrorist community, and treason. According to the security forces, Andreyev joined the Ukrainian project "I Want to Live" and communicated with one of the curators who allegedly coordinated the activities of Ukrainian sabotage groups on Russian territory. Andreyev then received instructions that allowed him to create a homemade incendiary device at home. On November 14, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Sergei Andreyev guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison and a fine of 1.2 million rubles. Andreyev must spend the first 4 years in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony.
