Case Description
In December 2023, a criminal case for espionage was opened against 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen Roman Tupalo in Mariupol, occupied Donetsk region. According to the Russian investigation, from February to December 2023, Tupalo allegedly transmitted information about the locations of law enforcement agencies of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs stationed in Mariupol to a person working for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense via a messenger. The court placed the defendant in custody. The Supreme Court of the Donetsk Republic found Roman Tupalo guilty no later than December 16, 2024 and sentenced him to 12 years in a strict regime colony. On February 25, 2025, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged.
