Case Description
On May 15, 2023, near Bakhmut in the area of the villages of Kleshcheevka - Krasnoye in the occupied part of Donetsk region, 20-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the Aidar regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Grushinsky was taken prisoner by Russian military. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was his service in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the nationalist Aidar battalion, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. According to the Russian investigation, in February 2023, in the Sumy region, Grushinsky voluntarily joined the ranks of the assault battalion "Aidar", underwent training at the training center of the National Academy of Land Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, after which he took part in hostilities against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics. 10 October 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Roman Grushinsky guilty, the size of the punishment is unknown. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
