Case Description
On October 31, 2024, the Main Military Investigative Directorate initiated a criminal case against U.S. citizen Robert Wertman. He was accused of mercenarism, murder and attempted murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group on grounds of political and ideological hatred, committing a terrorist act, intentional damage to another's property, illegal trafficking in firearms and large-caliber weapons, as well as explosive devices, encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer, use of violence against a representative of authority, and illegal crossing of the state border of the Russian Federation. According to the Russian investigation, Wertman took direct part in an armed conflict as a mercenary. Acting as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, being armed with automatic small arms and large-caliber firearms, using explosive devices, as well as military equipment, in early September 2024 he crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the Kursk region, after which, "pursuing the goal of intimidating the population, causing significant property damage and destabilizing the activities of government bodies, he committed criminal acts aimed at the murder and attempted murder of the civilian population." At the request of the investigator of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the court chose Wertman's preventive measure in the form of detention in absentia. He was also placed on the international wanted list. No later than March 12, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Robert Wertman guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 23 years of imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remainder of the sentence in a strict regime penal colony.
