Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region, a criminal case has been opened against U.S. citizen Robert Vardaro for participating in an armed conflict. The date the case was opened is unknown.
According to the Russian investigation, in February 2022, Vardaro joined an international legion and, until June 2022, fought on the side of Ukrainian forces against military personnel of the Russian Federation. He received more than 346,000 rubles for his mercenary activities.
At the request of the investigators, the court ordered Vardaro to be held in custody in absentia. An international arrest warrant was issued for him.
On March 28, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic found Robert Anthony Vardaro guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 7 years of imprisonment in a maximum-security prison. The verdict was not appealed and became final.
