Case Description
In Vladivostok in March 2023, former US consulate employee Robert Shonov was accused of confidentially cooperating with representatives of the United States of America, in order to assist them in activities knowingly directed against the security of the Russian Federation. According to the Russian investigation, Shonov, disagreeing with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, collected data for Washington on the military operation in Ukraine and mobilization, as well as data on "problematic issues" in the regions and their impact on protest activity ahead of the presidential elections in March 2023. On November 1, 2024, the Primorsky Regional Court found Robert Shonov guilty and sentenced him to 4 years and 10 months in prison with serving the sentence in a general regime correctional colony and restriction of freedom after serving the sentence for 1 year and 4 months.
