Case Description
In Yalta, in annexed Crimea, on October 27, 2023, an unknown person attempted to assassinate former Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev. The attack occurred around midnight on the territory of a sanatorium - he was shot twice, lost a lot of blood, but survived. Following the assassination attempt, the FSB opened a criminal case on the encroachment on the life of a state or public figure. On October 31, 2023, it became known that Petr Zhitsky, a 46-year-old native of Georgia, was detained on charges of assault. According to the security forces, he organized surveillance of a former deputy and equipped a cache 'with means of destruction' on behalf of the SBU. During the search, he allegedly found "a homemade explosive device ready for use, components for its manufacture, means of covert communication with Ukrainian curators, photographs of Tsarev, as well as schemes for approaches to the places of residence of the deputy and his work. Zhitsky was also accused of treason, aiding terrorist activities, and illegal possession of weapons and making an explosive device. The court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. On March 11, 2025, the Southern Military Court found Pyotr Zhitsky guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison, five years of which he will spend in prison, and the remaining time in a strict regime colony. In addition, Zhitsky was fined 800 thousand. rubles. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
