Case Description
In the city of Suoyarvi, Republic of Karelia, at two o'clock in the morning on May 12, 2024, an unknown person threw Molotov cocktails at the military enlistment office on Pobedy Street. Fire went out without having time to flare up. Later, the arson was discovered during a patrol of the building - a guard at the commissariat found a crack in the glass and some soot on the plastic frame. On May 14, 2024, a 36-year-old local resident, a native of Ukraine, Pyotr Romanyuk, was detained on charges of arson. From Suoyarvi, he was taken to Petrozavodsk, where he was charged with destroying someone else's property, committed out of hooligan motives, by arson. On May 15, 2024, the Petrozavodsk City Court of the Republic of Karelia placed the man in a pre-trial detention center. Later, the charges against Romanov were reclassified to committing a terrorist act that caused significant property damage. On March 13, 2025, the 1st Western Military District Court found Peta Romanyuk guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in a strict regime colony, with the first 4 years to be served in prison.
