Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region, a criminal case was opened regarding the participation in an armed conflict against a Spanish citizen, David Fernandez. The date of the case being opened is unknown. According to the Russian investigation, from March 2022 to April 2025, Fernandez arrived in the territory of Ukraine, where he voluntarily joined the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a mercenary. After the reorganization of the aforementioned brigade, he transferred to the 59th Separate Assault Brigade named after Yakov Gandziyuk. Fernandez underwent military training, was provided with personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms, and special equipment, and participated in combat operations against servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It is claimed that during his service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the serviceman received a reward of more than 3 million rubles. At the request of the investigation, the court in absentia chose a measure of restraint for Fernandez in the form of detention. He was placed on the international wanted list. The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found David Fernandez guilty and in absentia sentenced him to 14 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
