Case Description
In August 2023, a criminal case was opened in Kazan for repeated 'discrediting of the army' against local resident Pavel Stepanov. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a video published on November 9, 2022, on the VKontakte page, with reflections on the war in Ukraine. 23 August 2023, the Sovetsky District Court of Kazan chose a measure of restraint for Pavel in the form of arrest. Later, the charges were toughened - the charge of justifying terrorism was added. Earlier, in September 2022, Stepanova was fined under an administrative offense case under the article on discrediting the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation due to comments in VKontakte criticizing the war, Vladimir Putin, the market economy, as well as "xenophobic" statements." 24 July 2024, judge Kirill Budanov of the Central District Court ruled to apply compulsory medical measures to Pavel Stepanov.
