Case Description
Detonation with subsequent ignition of the cab No. 2 of the EP2K No. 159 electric locomotive, located on track 19 at the M68 traffic light, occurred at the Babaevo station in the Vologda Oblast on August 11, 2024, at around 1:30 a.m. As a result of the fire, the cab of the electric locomotive burned out completely. The train was traveling from St. Petersburg, there are no casualties, the situation did not affect the movement of passenger trains. On the same morning, two underage residents of the city of Babaevo, students of the Waldorf private school - 15-year-old Pavel Khazov and 16-year-old Cosmos Nevolainen - were detained on charges of arson. During the interrogation, the teenagers reported that they decided to earn 100 thousand. roubles and contacted a curator from Ukraine, who instructed them to set fire to the train. A criminal case was opened against the defendants for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. The court placed the teenagers in a pre-trial detention center. 12 May 2025, the 1st Western Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Pavel Khazov to 9 years in a penal colony and banned him from using the internet for three years. Kosmos Nevolaynen was sentenced by the court to 6 years in prison. The court also ordered to recover from both teenagers almost 24 million rubles in favour of Russian Railways - this is the amount the damage from the arson of the electric locomotive was estimated at." And from Khazov, an additional 161 thousand in favor of Tele-2 for burning the tower. January 20, 2026, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
