Case Description
In Moscow in December 2023, a criminal case was opened for "cooperation with a foreign state/organization to the detriment of the Russian Federation" against 43-year-old former prisoner Pavel Guguev. The criminal prosecution was prompted by two interviews with Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Karpenko. In 2013, the Noginsk City Court of the Moscow Region sentenced Guguev for murder, causing moderate bodily harm, and theft to 12 years in a strict regime colony, taking into account his previous suspended sentence for theft. Out of 12 years, Guguyev served 10 years in prison, went to war in Ukraine, and was captured there. While in captivity, Guguyev gave an interview to Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Karpenko, which was released on Vladimir Zolkov's YouTube channel. In the video, Guguyev spoke about heavy losses among Russian servicemen. Guguyev was later exchanged. While already in Russia, he gave a second interview to Dmitry Karpenko, which was published in July 2023. In it, Guguyev continued to talk about the situation in the Russian army. Guguyev also claimed that in Russia he was offered to declare that he was 'forced' to give an interview in Ukraine. The day after the interview was published, all prisoners who were in the military unit with Guguev had their phones confiscated, and they were also prohibited from going for walks and receiving parcels. The guards placed Guguev in a room that was previously used as an armory for several days. On December 15, 2023, the 235th Garrison Military Court sent Guguyev into custody. On April 10, 2025, the Moscow City Court found Pavel Guguyev guilty and sentenced him to 4 years in a general regime colony and 1.5 years of restriction of freedom. On November 11, 2025, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict.
