Case Description
On October 1, 2024, in the Kursk region during hostilities, Ukrainian citizens, sergeants of military unit A-2196 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Gonets and Pavel Cherny were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal cases were initiated against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on September 25, 2024, Gonets and Cherny, as part of an Armed Forces of Ukraine unit on a "Roshal" armored personnel carrier, armed with small arms and large-caliber weapons, as well as explosive devices, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. They proceeded to the Korenevsky and Glushkovsky districts to block several settlements. Having equipped observation and fire positions, they "opposed Russian military personnel, hindered the activities of government bodies and the evacuation of the civilian population, as well as intimidated peaceful residents, threatening to use weapons." On April 2, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Roman Gonets and Pavel Cherny guilty and sentenced each of them to 14 years of imprisonment, with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
