Case Description

On September 20, 2022, in Ivanovo, the police opened a criminal case for repeated 'discrediting' of the Russian army against 47-year-old local resident, activist, candidate of medical sciences, associate professor of the Department of Pharmacology at the Medical Academy, Olga Nazarenko. Searches were conducted in her apartment and at her workplace. The police seized phones, personal belongings, and monetary savings. Following the interrogation, the woman was released on her own recognizance not to leave. The reason for the criminal prosecution was Nazarenko's pickets and anti-war leaflets that, according to the investigation, she was pasting up." Since February 22, 2022, the activist has repeatedly held anti-war solo pickets, for which protocols on administrative offenses were drawn up against her under the article on "discrediting" the Russian army. A total of 8 protocols were drawn up against Nazarenko. The total amount of fines imposed by the court exceeded 265 thousand. roubles, the woman worked 260 hours of "compulsory labor. As work, she cleaned the territory of a children's park and took care of animals in the zoo. One of the punishments the court imposed was for a picket with a quote from the fairy tale 'The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors': 'All people, except very bad ones, want to live in peace — war brings grief and ruin.'", 5. A month later, another criminal case was initiated against the activist - for "repeated violations of the procedure for holding public events." 25 October 2022 Nazarenko, with 24 years of experience at the medical academy, was removed from teaching without pay based on a letter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Olga Nazarenko died in the intensive care unit of the Ivanovo hospital on October 21, 2023. She sustained serious injuries after falling from a height, and doctors were unable to save her." It is claimed that the cause of the fall was an accident. December 13, 2023, the October District Court of Ivanovo terminated the criminal case due to the death of the case participant. The court's decision was not appealed and entered into legal force.
