Case Description
5 February 2023, security forces detained 44-year-old local resident Nikolai Yurev in Novouralsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast. According to the FSB, he intended to set fire to the local military enlistment office on Perevalnaya Street, d. 15, with the help of Molotov cocktails, and its ultimate goal was to overthrow the constitutional order of the Russian Federation. A criminal case was opened against Yuryev for preparing a terrorist attack and he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. In June, the charges against Yuryev were toughened, adding an article on undergoing training to carry out terrorist activities and assisting in it. During the trial, it was revealed that at the time of his detention, Yuryev was with three Rosgvardia officers, whom he had met in October 2022. Yuriev accused them of incitement - in particular, he stated that one of the Rosgvardia officers was carrying bottles of incendiary mixture with him, and the other offered to test them. Rosgvardia employees were involved in the criminal case as witnesses, no charges were brought against them. During the hearing where Vugar Ibrahimov, the key witness in the case, was being questioned, listeners and the press were asked to leave the room. 19 December 2023, Judge Artem Makarov of the Central Military District Court found Yuryev guilty of undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities, assisting terrorist activities, and attempting a terrorist attack by a group of persons by prior conspiracy and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment. The first four years the convict must spend in prison, the remaining years in a strict regime colony. On August 29, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence.
