Case Description
In June 2023, early in the morning, a search was conducted at the home of St. Petersburg programmer and civil activist Nikolai Veprikov. Later that evening, the man was charged under the article on "spreading knowingly false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation." The basis for the criminal prosecution was a series of anti-war publications on social networks. In the city of Shuya, Ivanovo Oblast, in March 2022, an unknown person painted the inscription 'No to war' on the facade of the city administration building. The posts, in particular, speak about the death of civilians and military personnel, destroyed cities, and criminal cases for anti-war positions. He was also charged with several reposts on a similar topic from YouTube. On July 27, the court sent Veprikov to a pre-trial detention center, but a month later he was suddenly released from custody, taking a pledge not to leave. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the activist left Russia. In September, the Nevsky District Court placed Veprikov under house arrest for two months in absentia.
