Case Description
21-year-old Nikita Tishchenko and 17-year-old Artem Shmygly were detained in Saratov in May 2023. According to the investigation, Nikita Tishchenko contacted an "unidentified person" on Telegram who offered to set fire to a relay cabinet on the railway in Engels for a reward of 10 thousand rubles. The man told his 17-year-old friend Artem Shmygly about his plans, and they together attempted to set the cabinet on fire on May 7. On that day, Tishchenko and Shmygly broke into the relay cabinet, but later they were spotted by passersby, as a result both defendants decided to flee. The next day they returned to the railway, again broke into the cabinet using a crowbar, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire. Artem also filmed the fire on camera. Later, both defendants were detained by FSB officers. As the Investigative Committee's office for the Saratov region writes, the damage caused by Tishchenko and Shmygly was estimated at 169 thousand rubles. The young men fully compensated for it. The Saratov residents were accused of destroying someone else's property by a generally dangerous method. On May 15, 2023, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Saratov sent both to a pre-trial detention center. Later, the charge was reclassified as sabotage committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. Tishchenko was also charged with involving a minor in a crime. On December 21, 2023, the Saratov Regional Court sentenced Nikita Tishchenko to 10 years in prison: he will spend the first three years of his sentence in prison, and the rest of the term in a strict regime colony. Artem Shmygly was sentenced to 5 years in a juvenile colony. The sentence was not appealed and entered into force.
