Case Description
In October 2024, a second criminal case was opened against Nikita Afanasyev, who was serving his sentence, for assisting terrorist activities." According to the investigation, Afanasyev allegedly recruited other prisoners in colony No. 8 of the Zabaykalsky Krai: from August 2014 to May 2015, Afanasyev allegedly persuaded a man to commit a terrorist attack in the city of Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai, through a social network and video link. As evidence in court, the testimonies of the convicts were read out, which, in particular, spoke about the presence in the colony detachment of a common mobile phone, from which Afanasyev expressed anti-war views during illegal calls. He allegedly tried to persuade other prisoners to participate in hostilities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In July 2011 in Chita, two unknown assailants attacked a local resident who was walking with a young man of Roma nationality on Decembrists Square with knives. The man managed to escape after being wounded, while the girl who stood up for her acquaintance died. At the end of December 2015, a 26-year-old local resident, nationalist Nikita Afanasyev, was detained on charges of an attack. According to the security forces, Afanasyev immediately after committing the crime went to Ukraine to "confirm his loyalty to the extremist group.
