Case Description

On August 31, 2023, in the occupied Henichesk of the Kherson region of Ukraine, local resident, Crimean Tatar Nariman Abliazov was detained. He was charged with participating in an illegal military formation, the Crimean Tatar volunteer battalion named after Noman Celebidzhan. According to the Russian law enforcement agencies, since 2015, Abliazov voluntarily joined and actively participated in the activities of the 'Crimean Tatar battalion named after Noman Celebidzhan' operating on the territory of Ukraine, whose goals, in addition to implementing the food, energy, and water blockade of Crimea from the Ukrainian border, are to violate the integrity of the Russian Federation, as well as to fight, including armed, for the return of the peninsula to Ukraine. On August 31, 2023, the Henichesk District Court of the Kherson region chose pre-trial detention as a measure of restraint for the defendant. On June 27, 2024, the Henichesk District Court of the Kherson region found Nariman Abliazov guilty and sentenced him to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment, with a restriction of freedom for 1 year, serving 1 year in prison and the remainder in a maximum-security colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
