Case Description
A verdict has been handed down in absentia against another Georgian mercenary for participating in an armed conflict on the side of Ukraine. The evidence collected by the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia was deemed sufficient by the court to issue a verdict in absentia against Georgian citizen Mikha Demetrašvili. He was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 3 of Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict). The investigation and the court established that in 2022, Demetrašvili arrived in Ukraine and voluntarily joined a paramilitary formation as a mercenary, where he underwent training. Demetrašvili was provided with personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms, and special equipment. Subsequently, for material remuneration, he carried out orders from his superiors and participated in combat operations against representatives of the security forces of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, as well as Russian military personnel. At the request of the investigation, the court issued an arrest warrant for Demetrašvili in absentia. He has been placed on the international wanted list. The court sentenced Demetrašvili in absentia to 14 years of imprisonment.
