Case Description
In September 2022, military signalman Mikhail Zhilin secretly crossed the border with Kazakhstan and was detained on the same day. Due to formal access to state secrets, Zhilin was prohibited from leaving Russia. He applied for political asylum because he was being forced "to go to the combat zone to kill other people, Ukrainian citizens." The authorities of Kazakhstan refused to grant asylum, and on December 29, the man was taken to Russia. March 20, a court in Barnaul sentenced Zhilin to 6.5 years in a strict regime colony on charges of illegal border crossing and desertion during mobilization.
