Kriger Mikhail Aleksandrovich

In early November 2022, in Moscow, 62-year-old activist, a native of Ukraine, Mikhail Krieger was detained. He was accused of justifying terrorism. The reason for the accusation was a post from December 2020 on Facebook, attributed to Krieger, about another court verdict in a treason case. Before the activist was placed under house arrest, he was placed in a remand prison. On November 7, 2022, the Cheryomushkinsky District Court of Moscow sent Mikhail Krieger to a pre-trial detention center. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Krieger remained in Russia and openly spoke out against the war. His criminal prosecution is a reaction of the authorities to the activist's anti-war statements. On January 12, 2023, the investigation toughened the charges, adding an article on "inciting hatred or enmity" and a second episode of "justifying terrorism. The investigation considered that Krieger incited hatred and threatened to use violence against the group "FSB of Russia employees, and also justified terrorist activities by "threatening life (hanging) of a statesman - President of Russia V. V. Putin. On May 17, 2023, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Mikhail Krieger guilty and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment in a general regime colony and a 4-year ban on administering websites. On October 24, 2023, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
