Case Description

In September 2022, Mikhail Ishenko, a 27-year-old resident of Khimki in the Moscow region, was detained for burning the tricolor flag. According to the security forces, Ishenko came to the Rodina sports complex, located at Chkalov Street, d. 4 "A", climbed over the fence, doused the state symbol with lighter fluid and set it on fire with a lighter. A criminal case was initiated against the man for hooliganism motivated by political and ideological hatred and desecration of state symbols. September 26 Khimki City Court sent Ishenko to the pre-trial detention center. After the arrest, security forces allegedly found correspondence with a representative of the "Russian Volunteer Corps" on Ishenko's phone. According to this 'representative,' he was advised to obtain a foreign passport in order to leave Russia. In the summer of 2023 Ishenko submitted an application through Gosuslugi, but did not manage to receive a passport because he was detained for burning the Russian flag. Charges against Ishenko were toughened: a case was opened against the man for attempted participation in an "illegal armed formation. June 26, 2024, the Khimki City Court of the Moscow Region found Mikhail Ishenko guilty and sentenced him to ten years in prison. During the first two years, the man will have to spend time in prison, and the remainder of the sentence in a strict regime colony. November 26, 2024, the Moscow Regional Court added 1 year of restriction of freedom to the sentence.
