According to the Russian investigation, Batyrin had been training mercenaries for a long time and personally participated in an armed conflict as a mercenary. In September 2024, the defendant and other armed Ukrainian military illegally crossed the border of Russia and invaded the Kursk region. 2nd Western Military District Court found Mikhail Batutin guilty no later than March 13, 2025, and sentenced him in absentia to 25 years imprisonment, with the first six years to be served in prison and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The court also ordered the confiscation of monetary funds exceeding 2.6 million rubles, which Baturin received as a mercenary.
