Case Description
Denis and Maria Mamedov left Russia in October 2022 due to their anti-war views. After that, they began publicly telling about the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. The Mammadovs wrote appeals to the authorities: they demanded an end to the war and to hold the guilty accountable. Government agencies responded to the spouses that they themselves could be held liable under articles on "discrediting" the army, extremism, and the rehabilitation of Nazism. The Presidential Administration promised to forward the text of the letter to the FSB and the Investigative Committee so that they would conduct an investigation. On October 17, the court granted the prosecution's motion to choose a measure of restraint in the form of detention from the moment of extradition or detention. On April 12, 2024, Judge Yevgenia Kozlova of the Basmanny District Court of Moscow found Denis Mamedov guilty and sentenced him in absentia to eight years and six months in a general regime colony. On July 4, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Denis Mamedov guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison and a fine of 400 thousand. rubles. The first three years Mamedov must spend in prison, the rest - in a strict regime colony. September 16 and 18, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence of Maria and Denis Mamedov. Earlier, on October 2, 2023, the Mammadovs were put on the international wanted list in a case of "fakes" about the Russian army. The Mammadovs left for the United States in 2022. After emigration, they began to send complaints to Russian state bodies demanding an end to the war and actively write about their position on social networks.
