Case Description
Maxim Makushin, a 35-year-old native of Siberia and a serviceman in the ground unit of the Northern Fleet, was accused in July 2023 in the city of Olenegorsk, Murmansk Oblast, of illegally refusing to participate in combat operations. According to the military prosecutor's office, Makushin refused to go to Ukraine to participate in hostilities as part of a "special military operation" on the orders of the command. The serviceman justified his refusal by religious beliefs that do not allow him to kill people. September 28, 2023, Judge Vladimir Titarenko of the Murmansk Garrison Military Court found Maxim Makushin guilty and sentenced him to 2 years and 8 months in a penal colony-settlement. On December 5, 2023, Judge Ilya Agafonov of the Northern Fleet Military Court considered the appeal and left the verdict unchanged.
