Case Description

On May 1, 2023, at 10:17, at the 136th kilometer of the Unecha – Rassuha section in the Bryansk region, 50 meters from freight train No. 2528 of the Belarusian Railway formation, an "unidentified explosive device" detonated. The train was heading from Gomel to Bryansk, it consisted of 78 cars, eight of them derailed. The locomotive brigade was not injured. On the evening of May 2, 2023, a freight train was blown up on the section between Snyezhetka and Belye Berega near Bryansk. As a result, 26 freight cars derailed, including cisterns with propane-butane. No one was hurt. On the evening of June 10, 2023, 15 freight cars of a locomotive derailed near the Alekseyevka railway station in the Belgorod region. The empty train was traveling to the station of one of the enterprises. There are also no victims. In September 2023, 26-year-old Maksim Kosyachenko and spouses Tatyana and Dmitry Turiev were detained on charges of sabotage. They were accused of committing a total of five terrorist acts, by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant property damage. In addition to the derailments in the Bryansk and Belgorod regions, Kosyachenko and Turiev were accused of mining a dirt road in the Belgorod region on July 10, 2023, and carrying out an attack using a UAV on the military airfield Shaiykova of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in the Kaluga region from August 16 to 25 of the same year. According to the investigation, the defendants acted under the control of their 'curators' from the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. In October 2022, a representative of Ukrainian special services named Antoniuk recruited the Turievs, and a couple of months later, Kosyachenko. They and other unidentified members of the group were offered to purchase SIM cards from Russian mobile operators and send them to Ukraine. Then these SIM cards were inserted into drones and used for video control of the detonation of explosive devices. It is claimed that in February 2023, the Turievs and Kosyachenko bought 'at least ten' MegaFon SIM cards in Moscow, activated them and topped up their balance. Then they placed the SIM cards with the phone and charger in a package, which they covered with clothes and sent as a SDEK parcel to an accomplice in Belarus. For this, they allegedly transferred "no less than 100 thousand rubles" among the three of them. Sim cards then ended up with unidentified saboteurs who assembled bombs and surveillance cameras to blow up railway tracks, with which they infiltrated Russian territory. At the request of the investigation, all three were sent to the pre-trial detention center. On August 6, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Maksim Kosyachenko to 16 years of imprisonment with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime colony, Tatyana Turieva to 16 years in a general regime colony, and Dmitry Turiev to 20 years of imprisonment with the first 4 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime colony. The court also imposed a 2-year restriction of liberty on all three after serving their sentences and ordered them to pay 20 million rubles to RZD, more than 25 million rubles to Belarusian Railways, and more than 15 million rubles to other Russian transport companies.
