Case Description
In May 2016, a criminal case was opened in Berdsk against Maxim Kormelitsky, a 21-year-old local resident and RPR-Parnas activist. He was accused of inciting hatred on the basis of his attitude to religion.
According to the investigation, on January 21, 2016, Maxim Kormelitsky published on his page in the social network "VKontakte" a photo depicting the baptismal bathing in the ice-hole and accompanied it with a text in which he insulted Christians. Experts found hostility towards believers in the statement. Kormelitsky himself stated that he did not intend to call for violence, but only criticized "the mental state of people who sacrifice their health for religion" by copying a picture from another Internet community.
During the investigation, the defendant in the case was on his own recognizance.
On May 31, 2016, the Berdsky City Court of the Novosibirsk Region found Maxim Kormelitsky guilty and sentenced him to one year and three months of imprisonment in a penal colony. The basic sentence for the publication amounted to one year, three more months were added due to his unexpunged criminal record.
On August 10, 2018, the Novosibirsk Regional Court left the verdict unchanged.
