Case Description
In Moscow in April 2022, a criminal case was opened against politician Maksim Katz for "fakes about the Russian army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a video published on April 3, 2022, about the killings of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha. In the video, Kats placed responsibility for the killings on Russian servicemen. Later, the charges were toughened — a motive of political hatred was added. At the beginning of the war, Kats was not in Russia. On March 23, 2023, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow placed the politician under house arrest in absentia. He was also put on the wanted list. August 24, 2023, Judge Evgeniya Nikolaeva of the Basmanny District Court of Moscow found Maksim Katz guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 8 years in a general regime colony. On April 16, 2024, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentence.
