Case Description

On November 15, 2023, in the city of Shakhunya, Nizhny Novgorod Region, 49-year-old Ekaterina Babaeva and her 17-year-old son Maxim came to the building where the local military enlistment office is located and threw a bottle with an incendiary mixture at the part of the building occupied by a commercial organization." Ekaterina was filming this on video on her phone. The arson did not occur, and the mother and son were detained. During the interrogation, Ekaterina said that she had become a victim of fraudsters - she was tricked into transferring 400 thousand. rubles to the accounts indicated by the scammers. After that, the fraudsters, posing as an FSB officer, began blackmailing her: they threatened to arrest her for transferring money to Ukraine and to take her third son, Maxim, for the 'special operation'. According to the security forces' version, Vorobyova from February 24, 2022, to April 2023, posted publications on her VKontakte page 'containing knowingly false information, containing data about the Russian Federation conducting military aggressive actions on the territory of another sovereign state, calling them "Russian occupation"'." 4. Maxim refused to let his mother go alone, he himself set fire to the military enlistment office - Yekaterina could only provide a video broadcast for the provocateurs. Both mother and son were accused of committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. Katerina was also accused of involving a minor in a particularly serious crime. Both of them were sent to a pre-trial detention center by the court. On July 24, 2024, the 2nd Western District Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Ekaterina Babaeva to 13 years in a general regime colony and Maxim Babaev to 4.5 years in a juvenile colony.
